At Tiger Tops we have been undertaking sustainable practices since our inception and well before these become buzz words today. From the way we construct our lodges with the use of local materials and craftsmen, our approach to renewable energies (we installed Nepal’s first private solar panel installation in 1999), waste reduction and organic farming to our involvement in the local communities, this sustainability thinking forms the foundation of every decision we make. For more information on these practices please visit the Sustainability section on our website. Photo 1: Organic farm at Tiger Tops Karnali Lodge Photo 2: The fruits (or veggies) of our labour! A huge thank you to our friends at @world_animal_protection World Animal Protection for providing the Tiger Tops elephants with much needed supplies! Our elephant sandwiches (kuchi) are now filled to the brim with protein rich chickpeas, sweet molasses and salt, providing our herd with essential supplements to their diet. Each elephant consumes over 100 kuchis a day on top of 50kg of foraged grasses and branches from the nearby jungle. Pawan and Dipendra Kali (seen here) are thrilled with what’s on the menu today. All over Asia, captive elephants are struggling to be fed, but thanks to kind people at WAP, our herd are doing just fine. ........................................................................................................................................................................ @world_animal_protection #tigertopselephantcamp #tigertopstharulodge #tigertopskarnalilodge #nepal #saveelephants #habitat #mega #mammalsofinstagram #elephantsofinstagram #asianelephant #chitwannationalpark #bardianationalpark #bbcearth #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #eco #covid19 #lockdown @galoyalodge @mountain_travel_nepal @nepaltourism #love #elephanthumanconflict #wildelephants #natgeowild #wildlife #sustainability #wildforlife #elephantcorridor #grass #environment #climatechange @tripandtoniccollection

As we continue to see lockdown measures, social distancing and travel restrictions remaining in place; our herd at the Elephant Camp must be wondering where all their human friends have gone! Fortunately our team of mahouts continue to work around the clock to collect fodder for them, take them grazing in the forests close to the lodge and down to the Narayani river for their daily swims. For those of you who know our elephants well will be glad to hear that the old lady Gulab Kali continues to preside over Saraswoti Kali, who is cheeky, full of energy and hell bent on destroying everything in her corral. Chan Chan Kali and Chumpa Kali remain best of friends, vocalising loudly when they are separated even for a few minutes. Pawan Kali continues to ‘squeak’ in the early hours calling for her favourite snack – the elephant sandwich. Sandra Kali has been reunited with her mother Hira Kali in the jungle. Life at the camp continues as normal for now. Regarding the scientific research being conducted on site this season, unfortunately Dr Mumby and her wonderful team had to return to Hong Kong putting their data collection on hold. We very much look forward to welcoming them back once the restrictions lift to continue their behavioural and stress related studies. It is a truly tough time for those that work with elephants here in Nepal with very high costs and income drying up. At Tiger Tops we are fortunate that we have ample grounds, an understanding local community and some generous supporters. Our elephants will be safe for the coming months. However other captive elephants here in Nepal are not so lucky. We are touched that so many of our supporters have been asking about the company, our staff and our elephants during these unprecedented times. One month ago Nepal shut its borders to all visitors until the risk of COVID-19 has abated, forcing the tourism community here, including us, to halt all activities. At Tiger Tops we decided to close for the monsoon break two months early. All operations are temporarily shut with core teams at each location doing maintenance. Our herd of elephants are doing well and are enjoying the fresh grasses that the spring thunderstorms bring with them (more detailed post on our herd to follow in a few days time). The majority of staff are at home with their families, keeping safe. We very much look forward to seeing you all again in the very near future, providing you with unforgettable safari experiences, immersive elephant interactions and our famous Nepali hospitality. Over the coming weeks we will provide you with further updates as the situation becomes clearer. In the meantime we do hope you are all well wherever you are in the world. www.tigertops.com .................................................................................... #tigertopstharulodge #tigertopskarnalilodge #tigertopselephantcamp #nepal #lockdown #luxurylifestyle #staysafe #togetherathome #conservation @galoyalodge @mountain_travel_nepal #quarantine #saveanimals @nepaltourism #love #instagood @tripandtoniccollection #stayhome

The spring is the season of plenty in chitwan and this tigress and her three healthy cubs were enjoying the March sunshine on the dry riverbank close to our lodge.Cubs generally spend two years with their mothers before finding their territories of their own. However, the mortality rate of the cubs are high, with the likelihood that only one of these photographed cubs will make it to adulthood. Let’s hope the experience of the tigress proves the stats wrong. GAUR — BOS GAURUS The Gaur lives in sal forests at a moderate altitude, especially on the Chure range of Chitwan National Park. The animals are also found in Parsa Wildlife Reserve. Chitwan National Park experiences good number of Gaurs inside the park at this time of the year as the grasses and water in the hills dries up. Gaur is the largest extant bovine in the world. . . 🎥:@gothe_z ............................................................. #bovine #nepal #chitwannationalpark #tigertops #habitat #water #visitnepal2020 #naturephotography #natgeo #nature #bbcearth #natgeoyourshot #ecofriendly #responsibletourism @mountain_travel_nepal @pannepal @nepaltourism @galoyalodge
